Brunel University

The School of Engineering and Design, at the Brunel University, is considered to be one of the topmost and successful schools of its kind in the UK, providing a wide range of exciting, forward-looking postgraduate courses. Recognised as a centre of excellence in engineering and design with a strong focus on modern science and technology, the School has an international reputation in research and prides itself on high quality teaching supported by excellent research facilities. The School's high reputation has led to extensive and close-collaborative links with industry.
The School provides taught postgraduate and research courses in a variety of engineering and digital media courses, for example, Design, Electronic, Computing and Multimedia subjects. Teaching and facilities were rated 'excellent' in the last independent assessment.
Brunel's engineering and design courses feature high in UK league tables. In The Sunday Times University Guide 2011 Design featured 1st, and in The Guardian University Guide 2011 General Engineering was rated 6th in the UK, out of over 100 universities. In the current Research Assessment Exercise, 95% of academics in the School achieved international standard, with 100% achieving this level in General Engineering. General Engineering at Brunel is ranked 5th in the country and Mechanical Engineering is ranked 8th in the country by Research Power.
A number of postgraduate courses enjoy accreditation and approval status with, for instance, the IET, the IMechE and CIBSE and other courses are in the process of seeking accreditation. Some of the courses may be taken by distance learning with no attendance required at Brunel. In a recent student satisfaction survey the most satisfied students in the UK in Design studies are those that studied at Brunel, as published in the Times Higher Education Supplement in September 2007. Teaching on the Building Services Engineering courses have also recently been commended. The courses received the Happold Brilliant Award for teaching excellence by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.
The School has a flourishing student population with approximately 1,600 undergraduate students, 1,000 postgraduate taught students, 300 research students and fellows and 110 academic staff.

Facilities at the School include modern, well-equipped engineering, design and computer laboratories, motorsport workshop and wind tunnels, and for the digital media courses, a broadcast TV studio. For students on the aviation, aeronautics and aerospace courses there is a state of the art flight simulator with a VTOL facility enabling the testing of project and design work in a practical setting.
