Applied Sciences

The Department of Applied Sciences allows students to experience their subjects first hand using state-of-the-art-facilities. Our students are given the opportunity to conduct independent research, which can link to our internationally-recognised research groups or industrial placements or with external professional agencies such as the Forensic Science Service.

The department has invested heavily in new equipment provision so that students are exposed to the latest multi-purpose and specialist laboratories.

Because of its practical nature subjects within the department of Applied Science can take you in so many directions. Scientists are needed in an increasing number of industries. They can be based in small companies, public institutions or multinational corporations. Your studies could take you into the fields of bioscience, health care, public health, commercial and consulting analysts, food production or engineering.

Our science graduates have also taken up careers in biomedical research, fermentation technology, biological and technical product sales, quality control, the water industry, pharmaceutical industry, forensic science, the food industry, public health nutrition, sports nutrition, health promotion and health education, research and teaching.
