School of Built Environment & Engineering

This established and vibrant school offers postgraduate and professional development courses in the areas of the built environment, engineering, product design and textiles.

Our postgraduate portfolio includes a full range of research degrees (MPhil and PhD) as well as taught master's degrees in civil engineering, product development, electronics design, regeneration and sustainable communities, textiles and transport studies.

Alongside expertise in all traditional aspects of engineering and the built environment, the school also offers opportunities to understand the latest developments in new areas such as advanced composite design.

The University has a long tradition of delivering courses for the construction, engineering and textiles industries and we are recognised nationally as a provider of high quality education in these fields. Our lecturers are professionals who offer extensive expertise and experience; they have all worked in their respective industries and many are actively involved in professional bodies. We have excellent contacts with these industries throughout the region and are in touch with the latest developments across the sector, incorporating them into our teaching.

The school has a strong nationally and internationally renowned research base. Areas of excellence in research include:  inclusive and sustainable environments, mechanical structures, technical textiles and medical devices. Research work in general engineering, architecture and the built environment was assessed as ‘world-leading’ in terms of originality, significance and rigour in the government-led Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) results in December 2008, achieving the highest possible 4* rating. Research in the school into urban regeneration and in transport attracts international acclaim.

We have excellent facilities to support you on your chosen postgraduate route. From laboratories for practical research to the up-to-date IT resources and our unique design studio equipped with the latest CAD software, as well as campus-wide wireless and the option of remote access to University systems.
